England captain Harry Kane revealed that they are not afraid of saying that they can win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The team led by Gareth Southgate is among the betting favorites to win the competition after making it all the way to the World Cup semifinals in 2018 and placing second in the European Championships the year before. But Kane believes the Three Lions can win their first significant prize since winning the World Cup in 1966 in the Middle East.
“We must have faith that we can prevail. When I think back to England 10, 15, it almost seems as though we were afraid to proclaim we wanted to win it. Being unafraid to say it, I believe, is one of the major changes we’ve made with Gareth over the past four to five years,” England captain Harry Kane said. “You see, we are participating in this competition with the intention of winning it. Contrarian thinking is false. What good is going to a World Cup if you don’t think you can bring the title back? It will be difficult, and in order to succeed, we will need to work incredibly hard, be somewhat lucky, and have a lot of things go our way.”
However, Southgate’s team enters the World Cup following a dismal Nations League campaign that resulted in relegation. A win would be England’s first in seven games against Iran on November 21 after three draws and three losses, but Kane thinks their recent record has helped to temper expectations going into the tournament in Qatar. Kane has been in excellent form for Tottenham this season, scoring 13 goals across all competitions, including one in Saturday’s victory over Leeds at home, which was Spurs’ final match before the World Cup. However, the 29-year-old has participated in 22 straight matches for Tottenham, raising concerns about his level of fitness. However, Kane thinks the midseason World Cup, which begins on November 20, is beneficial.
