Tottenham has confirmed they have parted ways with head coach Antonio Conte after his outburst following their 3-3 draw against Southampton. Tottenham has stated that Conte’s deputy Cristian Stellini will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, with Ryan Mason serving as assistant head coach. Conte leaves Tottenham after 16 months in charge after an extraordinary rant against his players after they threw away a 3-1 lead at rock-bottom Southampton, capping a miserable March for the club that saw them eliminated from both the FA Cup and the Champions League, leaving them without a trophy for the first time since 2008.
“We have 10 Premier League games left and are fighting for a place in the Champions League. We must all work together. Everyone must pitch in to secure the best possible finale for our club and our fantastic, devoted fans,” Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said after the sacking of Antonio Conte.
“I’m not used to seeing situations like this. I see a lot of selfish players, but no team. We have 11 players who will take the field. I see selfish guys, players who don’t want to help each other and who don’t put their hearts into it,” Conte said. “They’re used to it because they’re used to it here. They are not playing for a significant cause. They don’t like to play under pressure or in stressful situations. It is simple in this way. This is Tottenham’s tale. The owner has been there for twenty years and has never won anything – but why? The club, or every manager that stays here, is solely to blame.”
Stellini has experience guiding this Spurs team this season, stepping in for Conte when he was sidelined for the vital final Champions League group stage win at Marseille, and then earning noteworthy Premier League wins over Manchester City, West Ham, and Chelsea. Antonio Conte has joined the litany of managers who have tried and failed to bring Glory, Glory to Tottenham Hotspur, including Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Nuno Espirito Santo. Now, for the second time in 23 months, they will be driven to the end of the season by a caretaker.
