Tottenham manager Antonio Conte revealed he stands by his criticism of VAR after they controversially had a goal disallowed late against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League. The 53-year-old Italian was dismissed for his objections after VAR disallowed Kane’s stoppage-time winner in the 1-1 draw due to offside, and he questioned the integrity of VAR in his post-match press conference.
“I haven’t had a change of heart. After the game, I believe I was quite clear in what I stated and I backed it up. It’s easy. I have the same sentiment towards the circumstance. I’ll say it again: the choice was terrible,” Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said. “I still believe that VAR makes mistakes impossible. You have the time and the screen. Because of these factors, mistakes are not conceivable. For me, using VAR makes it difficult to choose incorrectly. Additionally, it shows mental perplexity if you keep everyone waiting for five or six minutes.”
In the Sporting area, Kane was behind Emerson Royal when the Spurs wingback nodded the ball back in his direction. Kane appeared to have won the game for the hosts when the ball rebounded off a defender and fell in front of him. However, after a lengthy VAR review that left spectators in the stadium confused of whether Tottenham had actually guaranteed their spot in the next round.
Tottenham got a £20,000 fine after they objected to the decision to give Newcastle the opening goal in Sunday’s 2-1 loss, the FA announced later on Friday. The Newcastle striker chipped the ball into an open net after Tottenham goalie Lloris collided with him while attempting to handle a long pass. Tottenham players immediately surrounded referee Jarred Gillett in protest, and the home team was incensed by the decision to give the goal after a VAR check also found nothing incorrect.
