Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden is set to miss their Premier League fixture against Liverpool after undergoing surgery on his appendix. The 22-year-old was dropped from England’s squad ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine, and City stated that “it is uncertain at this stage how long he will be unavailable for.” City will host Liverpool at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday in an attempt to close the eight-point gap at the top of the Premier League. Pep Guardiola’s team will also face Bayern Munich twice in the Champions League quarter-finals and Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley Stadium before the end of April.
“He started having certain symptoms during the last 48 hours, and our doctor became concerned on Saturday afternoon when it became clearer what it could be,” England boss Gareth Southgate said. “Fortunately, he was in a position to see a specialist and have it operated on this morning. It’s obviously a major disappointment for both him and us because he’s had a few disrupted camps that haven’t worked out.”
People who have had their appendix removed should be able to resume normal activity within two to four weeks, according to the NHS. It remains to be seen whether professional football comes under this category. Foden has appeared in 36 games for City this season, scoring 13 goals and assisting on five others.
“It’s both shocking and surprising news. We’re so used to hearing about football players getting hurt in practice or during games, yet this is a medical issue. This is something entirely different, and it appears to have occurred quite suddenly. We don’t have all the details, but Foden is recovering in the hospital after having his appendix removed,” Rob Dorsett said about Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden said. “It’s a major setback for Gareth Southgate and England, but he’ll also miss Manchester City’s crucial lunchtime encounter against Liverpool next weekend. In the backdrop of the title fight versus Arsenal, supporters will be wondering how long one of their great players will be out of action while he recovers from surgery.”
