Rangers head coach Michael Beale revealed that he has a plan for Steven Davis despite the midfielder suffering a season-ending injury. Since Davis, 37, will be out of a contract in the summer, there have been rumors that he might have played his final game wearing a Rangers jersey. He last played on December 15 in a 3-2 victory over Hibernian as a substitute, but Beale thinks he still has something to give the Govan team.
“Since then, I have been inconsolable. Although it didn’t appear promising at the time, we had to wait for the swelling to subside before allowing him to undergo a scan and for Steven to analyze the data,” Michael Beale said about Steven Davis. “He will likely undergo surgery on it in the first few days of January, after which we’ll have a conversation. We have a strategy for Steven; going ahead, we want to keep him around the team as a player and then support him in his second job, if he chooses to pursue it. That topic was already being debated. On his future, only Steven Davis will have the last say.”
“He must undergo the procedure, listen to the surgeon’s advice, and then choose his next course of action,” he added. “Knowing Steven, I believe he will want to keep playing and that he is still capable of doing so. I personally feel like I’ve lost a lot. It really is a letdown. Between now and the conclusion of the season, he was going to be an important player for me. Steven hurts more than I do, in my opinion. Fair enough, we will have to decide, but Steven will have to make that choice. In my opinion, he still has at least 18 months left at this level after seeing him in the two or three weeks after I returned.”
