Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall believes that the Beth Mead injury is down to fixture congestion. The England star is in a battle against time to be ready for the World Cup in eight months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury late in Arsenal’s 3-2 loss to Manchester United last Saturday. Mead will visit a surgeon in the coming days to learn the full extent of her condition and is expected to be away for an “extended period.” Additionally, Arsenal manager Eidevall has used the same line of reasoning in his analysis of Mead’s setback, following Chelsea Women’s manager Emma Hayes’ criticism of the match calendar following the long-term injury suffered by Pernille Harder.
“The frequency of injuries and the game schedule, particularly for athletes competing in tournaments, don’t assist the injury problem,” Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall said about Beth Mead. “We definitely keep a close eye on and are concerned about player loading and tiredness. We wouldn’t have played her if it had been a consideration or if it had been clear to us before that game. But while it’s still possible, it’s challenging, of course. In this difficult time, I hope Beth can see how much we all care about her and want the best for her. The team and everybody in and around the club has been incredibly helpful.”
Mead has competed in 35 games for club and country this year, although 18 of those games were for England as they competed in international friendlies and advanced to the finals of the European Championships in the summer.
