Arsenal Women superstar Beth Mead has suffered an ACL injury which casts doubt over her World Cup hopes. Although the World Cup is only eight months away, the Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner will see a surgeon soon and is anticipated to be out for a “long period,” according to Arsenal. The forward, who has 29 goals in 50 international matches and 37 goals in 102 appearances for her club, suffered the injury during Arsenal’s weekend 3-2 loss to Manchester United at home.
“We can report that Beth Mead injured her anterior cruciate ligament during our Saturday match at Emirates Stadium against Manchester United,” Arsenal women said in a statement about Beth Mead. “Unfortunately, this means that Beth will have to sit out for a while. In the coming days, she will visit a surgeon, at which point more information about timelines will be determined. Beth will now have the full support of the club, and everyone will be working hard to get her back on the field as quickly as possible.”
Mead, who played a key role in England’s victory at the Euros in the summer, has scored three goals in the WSL and two in the Champions League for the Gunners this season. In addition to being crowned player of the competition and winning the Golden Boot with six goals, she was also selected Ballon d’Or runner-up last month. At the World Cup, which begins on July 20 and is being held in Australia and New Zealand, England will be back in action in a big competition the following summer.
