Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo believes he is bulletproof after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan. However, Ronaldo made his first public response to his explosive interview since it aired in a surprise and unannounced media appearance for Portugal ahead of their World Cup opener against Ghana on Thursday. This came despite concerns that it may have caused distractions in the Portugal locker room.
“Excellent conditions prevail, there are no issues, and we are totally concentrated. You may assist by not mentioning me. I’m iron-clad and utterly impervious to bullets,” Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo said. “I would be angry if you questioned other athletes about Cristiano Ronaldo. I want you to ask him anything you want regarding the World Cup and the team.”
Because England was playing Iran that afternoon, Ronaldo was made available to the media on Monday. The expectation was that the British media would be preoccupied and unable to attend. Since arriving in Qatar on Friday, Ronaldo has trained as usual with teammates after missing Thursday’s friendly victory over Nigeria in Lisbon owing to a stomach issue. He said he feels in good shape.
“I’m in excellent health, have fully healed, am training effectively, and am prepared to begin the World Cup in the finest manner,” he added. “This Portugal team, in my opinion, has incredible potential. We need to concentrate on the upcoming game, but I am certain that we can win. In order to move on, it is important to win in Ghana. The best team will ultimately be determined, but in my opinion, Portugal is the best squad competing in this World Cup. But we must demonstrate it on the field.”
