Hansi Flick will remain the Germany coach despite his side’s elimination from the group stages of the World Cup. Until the conclusion of his current contract, which is at least the German Euro 2024, he will continue to serve as the nation’s leader. After guiding Bayern Munich to two consecutive Bundesliga championships and the Champions League, Flick just took over as manager of the national team last year. He took over for Joachim Low, who had guided Germany to the World Cup in 2014 before a shocking group-stage exit in 2018 and a last-four loss to England at Euro 2020 the previous year.
They lost 2-1 to Japan under Flick, which prevented them from making it through the group stage for a second straight World Cup. A draw with Spain and a win against Costa Rica were insufficient to advance them. Wednesday’s discussion between Flick and German FA vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed that the federation has “complete faith” in the manager to guide them to the upcoming competition.
“We can accomplish far more as a squad than what we did in Qatar,” Germany head coach Hansi Flick said. “There was a significant chance we lost. We’ll use it as a teaching tool. In 2024, when Germany will host the European Championship, we want the entire country to support the squad once more.”
Oliver Bierhoff, who earlier this week resigned from his position as managing director of the national senior and youth teams, has already been succeeded by a replacement.
