Norwich won their first home game since October to help Norwich produce one of the most comprehensive football results of the weekend in the Championship. Before tonight, the Canaries had gone eight games without a victory at home; their lone victory came on October 29, when they defeated Stoke 3-1. When Jacob Greaves gave the visitors an early lead, it seemed as though it would be another miserable evening. However, that turned out to be their only shot on goal, and when Kieran Dowell equalized four minutes later, there was only one team left in the game. Just before the hour mark, Gabriel Sara put the hosts ahead to crown an excellent performance, and Josh Sargent’s late goal made the final score look more reasonable.
Hull took the lead after just 14 minutes, shocking the Canaries, who had joint-game-high scorer Teemu Pukki on the bench. Regan Slater headed the ball back into the danger zone after Ryan Woods’ corner had only been partially cleared. Goalkeeper Angus Gunn was unable to collect, and captain Greaves pounced on Benjamin Tetteh’s nod to score. Despite their terrible defensive performance, the hosts quickly turned things around and leveled the score within four minutes.
Onel Hernandez, a winger, was the mastermind behind the move. He made one of his signature sprints down the left flank to reach the byline before bringing the ball back for Dowell to score by a significant deflection off Greaves, who was then bumped back to earth. The rest of the half saw Norwich dominate, but Hull, who had lost only one of their previous 10 league games, kept them mostly at arm’s length.
The Tigers defended aggressively as Adam Idah headed Max Aarons’ cross over and Sargent had a shot deflected wide. After the half, David Wagner’s team continued to control play and deservedly took the lead on 58 minutes thanks to Brazilian midfielder Sara. Once more, Hernandez provided a standout assist, displaying deft footwork in the area before finding Sara, who finished the job with an unstoppable low shot into the bottom corner.
