Hull won their second game in a row under interim manager Andy Dawson as they produced one of the high-scoring football scores of the weekend in the Championship. The Millers entered the game with high expectations after their new manager Matt Taylor led them to consecutive victories in two games, but their East Yorkshire rivals easily defeated them.
Greg Docherty’s shot from the edge of the box toward the goal for Hull was the first to pose a threat. The player was later moved into a similar position by Jacob Greaves, but this time Viktor Johansson deflected his shot wide. After receiving a low ball from Jean Michael Seri, Dimitrios Pelkas shot wide from the next corner. In the first 20 minutes, Hull had perfect control. Pelkas dispossessed Wes Harding and sent in a shot from the edge of the box, forcing Johansson into another save. After 44 minutes, Hull’s pressure paid off as Greaves was on hand to nudge the ball home following a scuffle in the box following a corner.
Again playing with vigor in the second session, Hull twice forced Johansson into saves. First, Pelkas scored a free-kick, and then Regan Slater attempted to drive the ball in from a close angle. After 52 minutes, they regained the lead when Cyrus Christie dribbled down the right side and swished a low shot past Johansson.
Slater came close to adding a fourth goal, but Johansson blocked it as Christie again wriggled down the right-hand wing. Oscar Estupinan also had a chance to increase the lead, but he missed the corner after heading it. Hull kept looking for another, and five minutes from the end, Ozan Tufan sealed the victory after coming close with a long-range shot. Brandon Fleming set him free, and he snuck his effort past Johansson. Estupinan missed a great opportunity to score when he fired the ball over from close range. Georgie Kelly was on hand to tap in from Tom Eaves’ cross as time expired for Rotherham, cutting the deficit.
