England ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Ukraine. Find the Englsnd vs Ukraine Player Ratings below.
Jordan Pickford – 7
England’s number one had it easy because he didn’t have to make a save. With the ball at his feet, he was neat and tidy, and he made a couple of eye-catching long passes. Tougher games – and more labour – lie ahead.
Kyle Walker – 8
An intriguing matchup with Mykhailo Mudryk, which the Manchester City defence won. Walker had to keep alert to the threat the Chelsea winger offered on the counter-attack with his quickness, but Mudryk was finally removed. A good game.
John Stones – 8
It was necessary to be watchful early on in order to stop Ruslan Malinovsky’s early strike. England’s defence had a quiet game, but when called upon, Stones was assured, confident in his task, and frequently in the right position at the right time for his team.
Harry Maguire – 7
Again, this was hardly a game in which his defensive abilities were frequently put to the test. The Manchester United defender made a couple of clumsy passes, but he was his typical menace in the Ukraine box, missing a number of late chances where he should have done better with his headers.
Ben Chilwell – 7
A majority of England’s greatest work went down the right, but Chilwell, who stepped up when Luke Shaw was sent off in Naples, put up an enthusiastic performance. The Chelsea full-back was solid defensively and made a handful of characteristic dashes down the left as well as a number of dangerous set piece deliveries. Gareth Southgate should have this option available again.
Declan Rice – 7
The West Ham midfielder has an uncanny ability to be in the right position at the right moment to neutralise any threat. Rice made key tackles on the edge of his own box on several occasions in the second half as Ukraine threatened. Another strong performance with the Three Lions on his chest.
Jordan Henderson – 7
The West Ham midfielder has an uncanny ability to be in the right position at the right moment to neutralise any threat. Rice made key tackles on the edge of his own box on several occasions in the second half as Ukraine threatened. Another strong performance with the Three Lions on his chest.
Jude Bellingham – 7
After his stunning performance in Naples, England’s 19-year-old will have a quieter game. Early in the second half, he demonstrated what he is capable of with a powerful yet beautiful burst past three opponents near midfield. He also squandered a wonderful chance to score after being set up by Saka, failing to make contact with his attempted effort.
James Maddison – 8
Grew up in the game. Gareth Southgate gave him a free role after he started on the left. Regularly drifted in from the flank, ready to steal the ball from his teammates. He had two good chances in the first half to score his first goal for England, and he generated five chances today, the most by a player in his first England men’s start since Theo Walcott in 2008. Promising.
Bukayo Saka – 9
He was a consistent menace down England’s right after a quiet first 20 minutes or so. As his influence rose, so did England’s dominance. With his pace, cleverness, and intensity, he gave Vitaliy Mykolenko a run for his money at Wembley. With an inch-perfect cross, he set up Harry Kane’s opener, then his magnificent strike took the roof off Wembley. As his incredible season continues, he was named player of the match and earned the highest of the England vs Ukraine player ratings.
Harry Kane – 8
What else is there to say about England’s record-breaker? Missed a difficult chance in the first half, but made up with a typical Kane finish to make it 55 goals in a row. Working diligently for the squad once more until being replaced by Ivan Toney with 10 minutes remaining. Kane had a memorable day, complete with pre-match ceremonies.
Substitutes
Ivan Toney – 7
Finally, an England debut. What a turning point for him and Brentford. His first touch was a superb flick-on, something we’ve come to expect from Toney in the Premier League. He’ll be hoping that this is only the beginning.
Jack Grealish – n/a
Maddison was replaced in the 86th minute. A quick cameo at the end. Connected up brilliantly with Chilwell and forced a fantastic save from Anatoliy Trubin late on.
Conor Gallagher – n/a
After replacing Bellingham, he had four minutes plus stoppage time to impress. Nonetheless, the Chelsea midfielder had a late chance to score, but his effort went straight at Trubin.
