England player ratings (4-3-3)
GK: Jordan Pickford – 7/10 – Came through to keep England in the game for the whole of the first half.
RB: Kyle Walker – 5/10 – A worrisomely ineffective performance from the man who is typically key to England’s best work. Given who occupies his side for France, will need to step up the next time around.
CB: John Stones – 5/10 – His midfielders did not help, and he frequently showed carelessness and lack of focus while in possession of the ball.
CB: Harry Maguire – 5/10 – Ditto. Despite not receiving any assistance from those in front of him, he was too slow to move with the ball and repeatedly put his team under pressure. In Qatar, he had his least persuasive performance yet.
LB: Luke Shaw – 6/10 – Unable to test Mendy by bombing beyond the line of defense. A shame.
CM: Jordan Henderson – 8/10 – Hendo, that’s one way to stifle the criticism. rushed the box and threw one in. Clutch.
CM: Declan Rice – 6/10 – Despite putting in a lot of effort in the middle of the park, his final result was uneven.
CM: Jude Bellingham – 9/10 – Took some pretty smart positions to start the counter-press and give England the ball high up. Huge run and weight of the pass support Henderson. Such a clever athlete.
RW: Bukayo Saka – 6/10 – Terrible first half, but made up for it by giving England a three-goal lead in the second. Excellent finishing touch.
ST: Harry Kane – 8/10 – Form is transient, whereas class is constant. The top scorers don’t get anxious when they have dry spells, and Kane is one of them. showed his versatility tonight.
LW: Phil Foden – 7/10 – He wasn’t always in the game, but when he was, he was outstanding. Players are dragged out of position, and challenges are expertly surmounted.
Substitutes
Jack Grealish – 6/10
Marcus Rashford – 6/10
Mason Mount – 5/10
Eric Dier – 5/10
Manager
Gareth Southgate – 6/10 – By no means faultless, but excellence does not automatically result in awards. His team was fortunate to avoid going down a goal, but more importantly, they rallied effectively and controlled the game expertly in the second half.
