David Brooks has been called up by Wales boss Rob Page for the first time since he was diagnosed with cancer. When stage two Hodgkin lymphoma was given the all-clear one year ago, Brooks, an offensive midfielder for Bournemouth, made his club football comeback in March of this year. In October 2021, the same month he received his illness diagnosis, the 23-year-old was called up for duty for the first time abroad. Six times for Bournemouth since his recovery.
“I’m thrilled for him since he’s had a difficult path. Since you want your best players nearby, I tried to get him enrolled in camp (in March). He definitely satisfies that description. We realized we had to manage it,” Wales boss Rob Page said after calling up David Brooks. “Without encountering minor difficulties, you couldn’t have the same experiences as him. It was remarkable how Bournemouth handled the matter and kept him informed. He’s available, which is a blessing.”
Along with captain Aaron Ramsey, Brennan Johnson and Ben Davies, who missed the March squad due to injury, are back in the Wales team. Ramsey has missed Nice’s last three games due to a calf injury, and it is anticipated that he will miss a fourth when the Ligue 1 squad plays Lyon on Sunday. Despite having health concerns, the custodian, Danny Ward, performs. Ward missed Leicester’s catastrophic final three Premier League games because of a dislocated finger.
As a result of a jaw injury received while playing for Nottingham Forest last month, Neco Williams has also been called up. He had to stop his season. Tom Lockyer, who was set to make a comeback but passed out after Luton’s victory against Coventry in the Championship play-off on Saturday, is not allowed to participate. Joe Low, Morgan Fox, Luke Harris, and Liam Cullen are among the players who have not yet received a cap for Wales. Next month’s Euro 2024 qualifying matches for Page’s team involve Armenia and Turkey. On June 16, Wales plays Armenia in Cardiff, then three days later, they play again in Samsun.
