West Brom has confirmed the appointment of Carlos Corberan as their head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal. Steve Bruce, who was fired earlier this month with the Baggies hovering at the bottom of the Championship, gets replaced by the Spaniard. Before leaving in July after two seasons with the club, Corberan guided the Terriers to the Championship Play-Off Final last year, where they lost to Nottingham Forest.
After departing the John Smith’s Stadium, the 39-year-old spent a brief time with the Greek club Olympiakos, but he left the team in September, only seven weeks after arriving. On Wednesday, Corberan will train with West Brom. The club adds that although the makeup of its backroom staff hasn’t been decided, it will include James Morrison and Gary Walsh, who are currently employed there.
“Carlos is a top-notch coach, and I’m happy to welcome him to the team. He was on our minds from the beginning of the hiring process, and after meeting him, our admiration for his qualities only grew,” West Brom chief executive Ron Gourlay said after the appointment of Carlos Corberan. “He is a self-assured, energetic, and meticulous coach who shares my passion for seeing The Hawthorns succeed. We all agree that his leadership will lead to better performances and results and that there is still plenty of time left in the season for us to make a genuine run at the Championship league table.”
With only two victories in their first 16 games of the season, West Brom is now in 23rd place in the Championship and three points from a playoff spot. Corberan will be seeking to break the Baggies’ losing streak against Sheffield United in his debut game as manager. The Baggies have only won one of their previous 12 games.
