Grady Diangana scored the only goal of the game to help West Brom produce one of the narrow football results of the weekend in the Championship. Grady Diangana’s tap-in in the 15th minute gave Carlos Corberan’s team a sixth consecutive home league victory and a clean sheet. In more than 697 minutes of play—more than 11 hours of football—Albion has not given up a goal at home in any competition. After Jed Wallace struck the post and wasted additional chances while Daryl Dike missed two, West Brom was deserving of their return to winning ways. Goalkeeper Alex Palmer’s injury necessitated an unexpected change, resulting in David Button’s recall. There were tremendous chances at both ends of the field in the game’s open, end-to-end opening. But it was the hosts, helped by a strong stream of shots from Wallace and rookie Marc Albrighton, who had the superior performance.
Dike headed over an excellent opportunity for Albion to take the lead when Albrighton crossed the ball. Soon after, Coventry had a chance to make up for that error, but Viktor Gyökeres could only cast a peek in its direction from Jamie Allen’s center. Wallace, who was standing on the outskirts of the area, unleashed a shot for Albion that went over the bar. Wallace came close to finishing a nice move, but he hit the base of the post, and Diangana narrowly missed scoring on the rebound. However, Albion seized the lead after Wallace nodded on a long throw-in from Darnell Furlong with twenty-five minutes remaining when Diangana made no mistake from close range.
Wallace’s subsequent initial attempt from a corner curled comfortably over the bar. In the 61st minute, Josh Wilson-Esbrand, Josh Eccles, and Matty Godden were brought on for Coventry, who had had in control of the ball for long stretches of the second half. But they found it difficult to penetrate a staunch Albion defense that wasn’t used to giving up in front of their own supporters. When Gyokeres flew over from the edge of the box after receiving a pass from Allen, the Sky Blues should have done better. Gustavo Hamer’s free kick was a threat for the Sky Blues, but Button blocked it.
