Ken Sema scored a brace to help Watford produce one of the high-scoring football results of the weekend in the Championship. The unusual match began when Sema nudged home the opening goal midway through the first half, only moments after Watford’s first touches inside the West Brom area. Conor Townsend equalized from a corner won by their first attempt on target of the night to turn the game on its head midway into the second half. Their unexpected dominance was shattered 10 minutes later as Ismael Kone’s deflected shot dropped delightfully for Ismaila Sarr to tap home. Wallace then took advantage of another period of disarray, finishing from a little offside position after a clever pass from Daniel Bachmann had caught Hamza Choudhury off guard.
When Watford was jeered by their own fans just 10 minutes into a lethargic start at Vicarage Road between two sides without form and confidence, there was little inkling of the drama to come. Before Choudhury’s threaded ball forward found Mario Gaspar in the West Brom area, neither team had a single touch in the opponent’s box. Keinan Davis turned his square ball goalwards, but it landed for Sema, who bundled home the golden opportunity. West Brom may have felt aggrieved after being so comfortable up to that point, and more disappointments with their own finishing followed, with John Swift firing over a low cross from Wallace.
When Watford failed to clear Swift’s ensuing corner, Townsend put out a leg to deflect it past Bachmann and score his second league goal in five seasons at West Brom. After equalizing, the Baggies went on to have their best stretch of the game, but due to the unpredictable nature of the game, they were never safe and were put on the back foot again when Kone’s benign effort was expertly diverted into Sarr’s path for another straightforward finish.
Bachmann’s poor decision-making quickly brought the fourth goal of the night, with his bad ball to Choudhury picked off by Swift, whose stunning backheel reached Wallace, who beat the stranded goalie. Sema came in from the right wing and swerved into the far corner, where he took a big touch off Pieters and nestled just inside the near post.
