Sabri Lamouchi has been appointed as the new manager of Cardiff City. The 51-year-old former France international, who led Nottingham Forest from June 2019 to October 2020, has agreed to a contract and will take over for Mark Hudson, who was fired on January 14 after only 18 games in charge. Sol Bamba, a cult icon and former Cardiff defender, has been chosen as his assistant. Bamba, 38, was taught by Lamouchi while he was the Ivory Coast national team’s manager from 2012 to 2014.
While Hudson’s replacement was being sought, first-team coach Dean Whitehead was in charge. The former Sunderland and Stoke midfielder oversaw a 1-0 league loss to Millwall and a 5-2 loss to Leeds in the FA Cup third-round replay. Under the new leadership, Whitehead, coach Tom Ramasut, and goalkeeping coach Graham Stack will all stay on at the organization. The Bluebirds are now ranked 21st in the Sky Bet Championship table, three points ahead of Huddersfield, who are immediately behind them and have two games remaining.
“Sabri is a welcome addition to Cardiff City, and I extend my unwavering support to him. Following some thoughtful deliberation on the appropriate course of action for our club, his appointment was made,” Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan said about Sabri Lamouchi. “I have faith in Sabri to deliver the results we know this team is capable of, and I eagerly anticipate the games we have coming up. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to Sol returning to Sabri’s coaching staff, and I know you will agree. Dean [Whitehead], Tom [Ramasut], and Graham [Stack] deserve my gratitude for their dedication and hard work throughout the interim time, and I’m happy that they’ll be a part of our future plans as well.”
