Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor revealed that he will decide on his future at the end of the season. The 41-year-old earned his 500th appearance for the club in Saturday’s 2-0 league win over Dundee United, but his contract ends in the summer, and with Rangers manager Michael Beale linked with other keepers, it’s uncertain whether the veteran will choose to stay. McGregor was in a similar situation a year ago, when it was widely assumed that he was nearing the end of his career, but he agreed to a new one-year contract in the summer and remains the club’s No. 1.
“I need to concentrate on the games, wait for the season to end, and then make a decision. That is precisely what I did last year. I’ll focus till the end of the season and see what happens,” Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor said. “I think about if my body can withstand it, and whether I’ll be good enough to execute at the maximum level for me. Everyone says, ‘Play as long as you want,’ and I understand. But do I really want to sit on the bench? To be fair, I was at the beginning of this season, but I’d like to feel like I can offer something, and that will be a big part.”
McGregor’s 500th appearance for the club during two seasons humiliated him. McGregor will be honored with a testimonial match against Newcastle on July 18.
“Personally, it’s a huge honor. I’m not big on personal accomplishments, but this means a lot to me. I arrived here as a boy, and just earning one appearance, let alone 500, is a huge accomplishment for me. I was looking at it (the list) not long ago, and it’s a little list for the club being around for over 150 years, so it humbles me a little,” he added. “It’s amazing, and I’m grateful to the club for doing so. It will be a fantastic occasion because their fans are also of the highest caliber. It could be the first game of our preseason, so it should be a fun night.”
