Chelsea has named Bruno Saltor as the interim coach after the sacking of Graham Potter. Graham Potter’s first-team coach, Bruno Saltor, has no managerial experience and has been tasked with managing Chelsea until the end of the season – so who is the Blues’ interim manager? Although his surname may be confusing, Bruno, as he wanted to be called, is a well-known footballer who spent seven years with Brighton. He was a cult favourite with the Seagulls, appearing in 235 games and helping the club gain promotion as Sky Bet Championship runners-up in 2016/17. Bruno, who retired in May 2019, was also essential in establishing Brighton as a Premier League contender, playing under Chris Hughton and Potter.
The ‘El Capitan’ mural in Brighton commemorates his playing status and was painted on the side of a building in the city’s North Laine district to honour the club’s first season in the Premier League. After retiring, the former right-back joined Potter’s coaching staff as a senior player development coach before taking over as Chelsea’s manager in September 2022. Despite having only three and a half years of coaching experience, Bruno is currently in charge of one of the Premier League’s top clubs. In the Premier League, he will face Liverpool on Tuesday evening.
“We will all rally around Bruno and the squad as we focus on the rest of the season, along with our amazing fans,” Todd Boehly said. “We have 10 Premier League games left and a Champions League quarter-final to look forward to. We will throw everything we have into each of those games in order to finish the season on a good note.”
He must reshape a chaotic and underperforming side filled with big-money players while simultaneously navigating an extremely difficult Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid. Bruno will face Liverpool in his debut Premier League game as temporary Chelsea manager on Tuesday evening at Stamford Bridge. According to Chelsea, Potter has ‘agreed to collaborate with the club to ensure a smooth transition,’ and Julian Nagelsmann has emerged as a favourite to be his long-term replacement.
