Steve Bruce is hanging onto his job by a thread as West Brom produced one of the goalless football scores of the weekend in the Championship. Tensions were high before the game, which Albion could have won but was again left regretting those lost chances. The majority of the audience supported the Baggies throughout the game, but late substitutions by Bruce sparked loud cries for the manager to be fired, along with taunts for the club’s owner Guochuan Lai.
Prior to this game, Albion had given up a goal within the first 15 minutes of seven of their 12 games, but after just 47 seconds, they nearly took the lead. Before Dara O’Shea headed wide from a corner, Jed Wallace advanced and crossed for Brandon Thomas-Asante, who turned the ball just wide of the near post. Thomas-Asante again entered a dangerous area and flashed the ball across the face of the goal, giving the Baggies the perfect start. Ethan Horvath then turned away a weak attempt from Wallace as Albion appeared to be the more dangerous team in the first 15 minutes.
Five minutes later, though, Okay Yokuslu cleared Dan Potts’ goal-bound header from a corner off the line, giving Luton their first opportunity of the game to take the lead. At the other end, Albion was starting to create more opportunities, and Thomas-Asante pounced on one after Jake Livermore’s deflected attempt fell to him from 12 yards out.
With Albion seeming more likely to break the tie in the opening frame, Luton was having little success on offense as Carlton Morris blasted into the side-netting. When the Albion manager substituted Thomas-Asante and Diangana with 10 minutes remaining, the crowd erupted in a chorus of “Bruce out.” Albion had survived and had gone again with Wallace curling wide. West Brom is currently eight games without a win after failing to find a winner despite late pressure.
