Blackburn put on a superb second-half performance as they produced one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Championship. After a lackluster first half, Rovers appeared to have put an end to the game with a six-minute run that saw Ben Brereton Diaz score his fifth goal of the season at the far post and Tyrhys Dolan capitalize on a defensive blunder to score in the 57th. Jake Cooper’s header cut the lead in half, and Millwall made a valiant effort to score an equalizer, but they squandered two chances in stoppage time, and Rovers held on.
It perfectly captured the contest, in which neither team was convinced, although Rovers bounced back from their loss at Luton last month to move into the top six of the Sky Bet Championship, while Millwall fell to 16th after suffering their fourth road loss of the year. Sam Gallagher replaced Hayden Carter in the Rovers lineup, while the Lions remained unaltered. Although they put up generally poor performance, Millwall had a lifeline from their captain Cooper, who climbed to the highest position and emphatically headed in a Tyler Burey cross 15 minutes before the end. The Lions had two chances in stoppage time, but Zian Flemming’s attempt at the far post was the off goal, and Andreas Voglsammer sent a fierce shot just over the crossbar.
Managers Reaction
Blackburn’s Jon Dahl Tomasson: “Very good victory, to be honest. An enjoyable performance. They didn’t have a shot on goal for the first 70 minutes, and we had control of the game. We had the opportunity to score additional goals, and it was encouraging to see the lads apply what they had learned in practice to the actual game.”
Millwall assistant Adam Barrett: “We were reasonably happy with our halftime score of 0-0. I believed we had the better opportunities, but we didn’t quite seize them.”
