Bristol City eased the pressure on manager Nigel Pearson as they produced one of the goalless football results of the weekend in the Championship. The play-off-chasing Lions held on while the tenacious Robins battled for a victory, and Andreas Voglsammer hit the crossbar for the home team. This brought the visitors’ winless streak to only one in nine Championship games. Andreas Weimann, the captain of the Robins, could have won it in overtime, but Pearson’s guests were forced to settle for a point and are now only three points above the relegation zone. Gary Rowett, the manager of Millwall, kept the same lineup that defeated Watford 2-0 on Boxing Day, while Pearson made three adjustments and started Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo up front.
Following a crazy run down the left, Murray Wallace of Millwall curled over, then Tom Bradshaw was unable to get a hold of a Tyler Burey cross for a header. Semenyo came near as the home crowd became more and more irate at the end of the first half, but Bristol City continued to provide difficulties for Rowett’s team on the break. However, Millwall had the closest opportunity to score first just before halftime when Voglsammer’s strong goal-bound shot was brilliantly blocked by Rob Atkinson.
Burey started a hard run down the left but was unable to find the decisive pass as Millwall attempted to up the pace of their performance in the second half. Semenyo’s attempt from outside the box was blocked, but Bristol City continued to pose a danger and enjoy promising stretches of possession. The Robins striker was once more in the heart of the action on the hour mark when he was unable to fully latch on to a threatening Conway cut-back. Max O’Leary pushed Wallace’s glancing header beyond, and Jake Cooper nodded over from the ensuing corner as Millwall struggled to include the in-form Flemming in the action.
