Josh Bowler scored a late equalizer to help Blackpool produce one of the close football results of the weekend in the Championship. In the 90th minute, Bowler pounced to boost Andy Lyons’ effort and deny goals from Matty Pearson and Josh Koroma, ensuring victory even in a fierce match at Bloomfield Road. With the stalemate, Mick McCarthy’s team has now gone 12 games in the Championship without a victory, although they did at least break a run of two straight losses and are presently 23rd in the standings, while the Terriers are 22nd. The first genuine opportunity for the visitors came in the 18th minute when Martyn Waghorn’s shot was expertly stopped by Chris Maxwell in the Blackpool net. The visitors had the best of the early exchanges.
Three minutes later, Town’s Jonathan Hogg was the next to go close, blasting a shot past the left post following a set-piece routine. It took the home team some time to get into the game, but when they did, Jerry Yates and Sonny Carey replied with effort as they tried to attack their opponents on the break. But when Blackpool failed to clear the threat on the edge of their own area, the Terriers’ dominance was ultimately rewarded as Pearson nudged the ball home.
However, just seconds before halftime, Gary Madine was sent out for what appeared to be an elbow on Tom Lees, making their task even more challenging. With a player advantage and a goal advantage, the Terriers attempted to impose their control after the break. David Kasumu and Waghorn both missed excellent chances to increase their lead.
And in the 82nd minute, Lyons made the visitors regret their lost opportunities with a deft effort with the outside of his boot from the right side of the box. When Koroma drove the ball home from the edge of the box with four minutes remaining, the Huddersfield team appeared to have snatched all three points, sending the visiting Town supporters into a frenzy. However, Bowler rose up to push the ball home from close range and give Mick McCarthy his first point as Blackpool manager on his 64th birthday as the home team stared down a third straight defeat.
