Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin has been handed an eight-match ban after accusing Ryan Porteous of cheating. He said this after Easter Road’s defender was brought down in the penalty area during a game between the two teams and was given a penalty by the official, David Dickinson, while Dons’ defender Liam Scales was given a straight red card. The SFA has given Goodwin an eight-match suspension, two of which are postponed until the end of the current season, for his outburst during Aberdeen’s 3-1 loss to the opposition. Goodwin’s suspension would prevent him from playing against Dundee United, Hearts, Partick Thistle, Motherwell, Rangers, and Hibernian. Aberdeen expressed their “great disappointment” and announced that they would be appealing the decision.
“Although we won’t receive the official reasons for the judgment until next week, we will be appealing it,” Aberdeen said in a statement after head coach Jim Goodwin was handed an eight-match ban.
“I’m not sure how frequently the boy Porteous can get away with that sort of behavior. Midway through the week, we instructed our players to be cautious around him in the box, be cautious around him during set plays, and avoid touching him because he might go over. Prior to the game, I really made a joke and laughed with the referee to let him know about it. He was unfortunately taken in hook, line, and sinker just before halftime,” Goodwin said. “We demonstrated several situations in which Porteous successfully won penalties in the past to our players. People will claim he’s smart and good at it, but in my opinion, it’s obvious cheating and it has lost my team points. After the game, I told Porteous face-to-face what I thought of him. I don’t care what he reads on Sunday and Monday in the newspaper. He’s aware. He is making fun of it. He celebrates successful penalty kicks as though they were goals.”
