Paris Saint-Germain head coach Christophe Galtier revealed that Lionel Messi will leave the club at the end of the season. Messi, who left Barcelona in 2021 to join the French team, has been linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabia, while rumours of a return to the Nou Camp have gained steam in recent weeks in Spain. Before PSG’s final match of the season against Clermont Foot on Saturday, Galtier has already made it clear that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner’s future lies outside of the Parc des Princes.
“The honour of coaching the greatest football player in history was mine,” Paris Saint-Germain head coach Christophe Galtier about Lionel Messi. “I hope he will be welcomed with open arms because this will be his final game at the Parc des Princes. He has been a valuable team member this year and is constantly accessible. None of the remarks or critiques, in my opinion, are warranted. He has consistently stood with the squad. It has been a huge honour to travel with him this season.”
Messi has contributed to 21 goals and 20 assists for PSG this season across all competitions, but his relationship with the team’s supporters has soured as the Argentina captain was treated to jeers as the French team once again came short of winning the Champions League. A 12-month extension of his first two-year contract, which was optional and was worth £25 million annually after taxes and bonuses, will not take place today.
