Cristiano Ronaldo set new records for goals and appearances as Portugal defeated Luxembourg 6-0. Ronaldo made a world-record 197th appearance in Thursday’s 4-0 triumph over Liechtenstein, breaking the previous record established by Kuwait forward Bader Al-Mutawa. And the former Manchester United striker scored twice more against Luxembourg on Sunday, bringing his international tally to 122. Ronaldo scored after nine minutes and added his second just after the half-hour mark, with Chelsea’s Joao Felix and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva making it 3-0 inside 18 minutes.
Otavio made it 5-0 just two minutes after coming on in the second half, and Rafael Leao capped the scoring in the 88th minute after missing a penalty earlier in the game. Italy rebounded from their defeat to England with a 2-0 victory in Malta, with to first-half goals from Mateo Retegui and Matteo Pessina. Slovenia defeated San Marino 2-0 in Group H, owing to a strike from Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko and an own goal from Roberto Di Maio, while Slovakia defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in Group J, thanks to first-half goals from Robert Mak and Lukas Haraslin.
