Manchester United has spoken to Burnley about signing Wout Weghorst on loan until the end of the season. United is awaiting word on if Burnley and Besiktas can agree to terminate his loan as well as whether the math makes sense. There are rumors that the player wants to move to Old Trafford. However, any move will only happen if the team is paid, according to Ceyhun Kazanci, the sports director of Besiktas; otherwise, Weghorst will complete his season-long loan.
“The assertion that our player’s contract contains an escape clause allowing him to leave for the Premier League in exchange for 2.5 million euros (£2.2 million) is untrue,” Besiktas said after Manchester United showed interest in Wout Weghorst. “It is entirely incorrect that the player in issue will be leaving the team on Tuesday as reported. Besiktas alone is in charge of the Wout Weghorst initiative.”
It is no secret that United wants to add a No. 9, and Weghorst would give them more than just his prolific club and international scoring record; he would also give them a physical presence. The 6-foot-6 Besiktas striker scored the game-winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 Super Lig victory over Kasimpasa. He has nine goals in 18 games this season. After scoring, Weghorst appeared to bid the team’s fans a tearful farewell. When seeking for a player with Weghorst’s skill set in the summer, United expressed interest in Sasa Kalajdzic and Benjamin Sesko.
“Weghorst is a crucial component for us. Saying goodbye to the audience is insufficient. He should also speak with the club,” Besiktas head coach Senol Gunes said. “I’ve heard of such a development, but I’m not sure what it is. I’ll consider [him] leaving when I speak with [him] and the club.”
