Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is set to face trial next year on charges of attempted rape and assault. The athlete, who is 21 years old, appeared at a hearing on Monday at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court. The football player spoke just to confirm his name and birthdate while wearing a black suit, a white shirt, and a black tie. A case management hearing has been scheduled on February 10 of the following year, per the request of the prosecutor, Jason Pitter KC. The trial was set for November 27, 2023, and was expected to last 10 days. No pleas were offered in response to the accusations. The parents of Greenwood were present during the brief hearing, which lasted under ten minutes.
Mason Greenwood of Manchester United was given bail with the same limitations as before by Judge Maurice Greene. The football player was first taken into custody in January in relation to allegations involving a woman after images and videos were posted online. He was given bail, but in October he was arrested on suspicion of disobeying the conditions. Greenwood made an appearance at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on October 17 and was subsequently remanded in custody. He was released from HMP Berwyn in Wrexham two days after his bail application was granted in a confidential hearing. He was given bail with the condition that he stay at a home on Bow Green Road in Bowdon and desist from getting in touch with the complainant or any other witnesses.
The attempted rape reportedly took place in October 2021. He is said to have acted in a controlling and coercive manner between November of last year and October of this year, accessing and monitoring the complainant’s social media accounts and berating her. The actual bodily injury assault charge dates back to December 2021. Hours after the allegations went viral online at the beginning of the year, the forward, who has made one appearance for England, was barred from participating in games or practices with the Old Trafford club. Greenwood’s endorsement deal with Nike was suspended and ultimately canceled, and Electronic Arts stated that he had been removed from the active teams in the FIFA 22 video game.
