Manchester United football player Mason Greenwood will be released after having his bail application granted. The 21-year-old forward is accused of coercive behaviour, attempted rape, and assault. Following his Monday appearance at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, he was remanded in jail. In Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court on Wednesday, a secret hearing for a bail application was held. Following the hearing, a court spokeswoman revealed that bail had been approved, with the conditions that the defendant must refrain from contacting any witnesses—including the complainant—and stay at a home on Bow Green Road in Bowdon.
On November 21, Greenwood was due to make another appearance in court, however he skipped the quick hearing. Three offences are allegedly committed by the same woman. After images and videos were posted online, the footballer was initially held in January in relation to allegations involving a young woman. Since then, he had been out on bond, but on Saturday, he was arrested close to Trafford on suspicion of violating the conditions of his parole. He is said to have used coercive and controlling tactics between November of last year and October of this year, including accessing and monitoring the complainant’s social media accounts and berating her.
The actual bodily injury assault charge dates back to December 2021. Mason Greenwood, a forward for Manchester United who has played once for England, was not allowed to practise or play for the Old Trafford team for hours after the allegations went viral online at the beginning of the year. Greenwood’s contract with Nike as a sponsor was suspended and ultimately cancelled, and Electronic Arts stated that he had been removed from the active teams in the Fifa 22 video game.
