Manchester City Women captain Stephen Houghton has signed a one-year extension. After first joining City in November 2013 from Arsenal, the new contract will keep the 35-year-old there until 2024, extending her spell thereby more than ten years. Eight trophies, including four League Cups, three Women’s FA Cups, and one WSL championship, have been won by Houghton during her stint at the club. With 233 games played across all competitions and 21 goals scored, including two in her previous six games, the defender holds the record for most female appearances for Manchester City.
“I’m ecstatic to have another year with this incredible club to look forward to. I’ve lived at Manchester City for over ten years, and I adore everything about it. It’s my club, so I’m over the moon to have signed for another year,” Manchester City Women captain Stephen Houghton said. “I never really placed a figure on it when I initially joined because all I wanted was to play at the highest level and stay here as long as I could. However, when you approach the decade mark, you start to consider reaching that objective.”
“Since I feel great about my body and I love playing football, making the decision was pretty simple for me,” she added. “I believe I have a lot to offer the other girls in terms of my knowledge and experience, both on and off the pitch, and I’ll keep supporting everyone as much as I can. My happiness has always come first for me in terms of my profession, and I’m thrilled to be sitting here with another year in City Blue ahead of me.”
After a challenging few years, Houghton receives a contract extension. After sustaining an Achilles injury that kept her out of the 2021/22 season for a sizable portion, she was in a race against time to be ready for Euro 2022. She was a part of the first 28-player training team but was left off the final roster, preventing her from participating in England’s tournament success.
