Former Man City captain Vincent Kompany has questioned the motives of the club’s critics after the Premier League champions were hit with more than 100 breaches of the financial rules. The Premier League published the stunning charges on Monday, which cover the years 2009 to 2018. The punishments for the team, if found guilty, may range from fines to demotion. Kompany played for 11 years at the Etihad Stadium, winning four League Cups, two FA Cups, and four Premier League titles. Kompany claimed he was too preoccupied with preparing for Burnley’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over Ipswich to respond directly to the allegations levied at the doors of his previous employers.
“I sort of stare at it and perhaps scoff a little. There are undoubtedly many virtuous people in the world who will come and tell you what you’ve done wrong, but I believe that the football industry, in general, cannot afford to point the finger too much,” former Man City boss Vincent Kompany said. “Knowing what the football industry is all about should put a grin on your face, in my opinion. When individuals begin accusing others, I tend to be quite dubious. Try your best for yourself, and let’s constantly strive to get better, but I have a tendency to be dubious when blame is readily assigned.”
If Manchester City is found to have broken the regulations over the course of nine seasons, many Premier League clubs want them to be expelled from the division. City said on Monday that they were “surprised” to have been accused of 101 alleged financial rule violations by the Premier League. The English Football League would reportedly not be required to accept City’s expulsion from the Premier League, which would be the most severe sanction in these circumstances. There is a perception that retroactively stripping City of its titles would be pointless and confusing, but a fine is also unlikely to have much of an impact. Up until Monday, the clubs that had been pleading for action the most were some other members.
