Man City head coach Pep Guardiola doesn’t believe his team has mentality issues and has assumed responsibility for their recent poor form. The 2-0 victory by Arsenal against Spurs in the north London derby following City’s 2-1 defeat at rivals Manchester United put some gap between the two groups, and it was Guardiola’s team’s second straight loss after their Carabao Cup departure to Southampton. Guardiola is not convinced that there is a psychological issue with the City team as a result of their recent slump in performance.
“People enquire as to why City isn’t currently leading the league, yet it does. Although it is understood that the other team is superior, there is a team that has performed admirably thus far. What should we do?” Man City head coach Pep Guardiola said. “The only way is to attempt to win our games and play even better rather than waiting to see what they will do. Because of the game against United and the prior game against Chelsea, I do not believe it is an attitude issue (a 1-0 win). We performed incredibly well.”
“We have always believed. When we lose a game, there is a constant propensity to blame ourselves, our mentality, or the lack of a fight. But perhaps there was a tactical reason I chose not to assist them. Since I am the one in charge, I need to find a way to assist the team in improving,” he added. “I wish to compete for the Premier League and all other championships. There are still 60 points to be earned and several challenging games for everyone. We will fight, but we might lose. Even when I’m eight points ahead, I never feel at ease. Never before, never during a game. It is preferable [to have an eight-point lead]. You are still there even if you lose points. You cannot lose points when you are eight points behind.”
