Liverpool are hopeful of completing the transfer of Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister this week. Regarding the Argentine World Cup champion, whose contract contains a release clause of between £45 million and £55 million, the two Premier League teams have been in contact. Mac Allister renewed his contract with Brighton in October of last year, extending it from the summer of this year to the summer of 2025 with an option for an additional year. After the release clause has been fulfilled, it is anticipated that Liverpool and Mac Allister will immediately reach a personal agreement. The 24-year-old’s arrival is expected to mark the start of what appears to be a hectic summer at Anfield, where Jurgen Klopp is aiming to retool a team that failed to qualify for the Champions League this season.
Since Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner all have expiring contracts and Arthur Melo will be returning to Juventus at the end of his loan, midfield is a specific area of need for Liverpool. In the Premier League, Brighton came in just one spot behind Liverpool, and they will make their European debut the following year. Mac Allister left Argentinos Juniors for Brighton in January 2019 but remained there for the remainder of the season before spending the first part of the 2019–20 season on loan at Boca Juniors.
After ultimately relocating to the Amex in January 2020, Mac Allister played 112 appearances for Brighton, with 20 goals and 9 assists. In 2022–23, he had a breakthrough season, contributing significantly to Roberto De Zerbi’s successful squad and scoring 12 goals across all competitions. As Lionel Scaloni’s squad won the World Cup in Qatar in November and December, Mac Allister solidified his position in the midfield for Argentina, starting six games, including the championship game.
“He is an excellent player and a great unifying force. He holds onto the ball and advances it, reminding me somewhat of an Ilkay Gundogan without the goals,” Paul Merson said after Liverpool are on the verge of signing Alexis Mac Allister. “Jude Bellingham, who they had previously desired, was a different sort of player; whereas Bellingham would move ahead a bit more, Mac Allister excels at the straightforward tasks.”
