Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes the team cannot just rely on the Anfield atmosphere as they host league leaders Arsenal this weekend. Despite a dismal season, Liverpool has only lost once at home this season in the Premier League and has conceded nine goals. They face an Arsenal team desperate to win their first title since 2004, but the Gunners haven’t won a league game at Anfield since September 2012, when current manager Mikel Arteta was playing in midfield. Liverpool has gone four games without a win in all competitions, but their most recent success – a 7-0 thumping of rivals Manchester United – demonstrates what is possible in front of their own fans.
“I’m not sure what you can say about us right now, so that demonstrates the issue. It’s still Anfield, we’re at home, and we still need to react and develop,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said. “Anfield is not the only thing we should rely on, but it is no secret that the mix of our people, the ground, and the boys is fairly good. That is what we have to throw in, but we cannot rely on it. I have strong confidence we can pull it off.”
With 10 games remaining, Liverpool is seven points below the top four and has four clubs above them in the rankings. They still have games against Tottenham, Brentford, and Aston Villa in the run-in, but they have lost more league games in 2023 than they did in 2022, when they won two trophies and finished runners-up in the Champions League and Premier League.
“We need to improve our football and keep the ball in crucial situations. It sounds simple, but the recent game versus Chelsea was a great example,” he added. “Last season, the two clubs performed admirably, but neither was able to repeat. That simply demonstrates what happens when confidence levels are not at their peak. We have to assist the boys in various ways, and in a home game, the crowd may be a huge assistance.”
