Chelsea’s new caretaker manager Frank Lampard believes that Mason Mount is an important player for the club. Lampard has been named interim manager until the end of the Premier League season, a little over two years after being fired by the club. Mount played a significant role under him as the 44-year-old previously guided the Blues from July 2019 until January 2021. However, the England international has had a rough season due to injuries, a lack of form, and uncertainty over his future at Stamford Bridge, since his contract is set to expire next summer. The 24-year-old has gone unnoticed in Chelsea’s last two games, but he could make a comeback under Lampard.
“Mason Mount was an excellent player for me at Derby and Chelsea,” Frank Lampard said. “I know he’s had a couple of minor injuries. I need to talk to him and find out where he is, but I know what Mason tells me. He’s an important player for Chelsea. Modern football has large squads, and I understand Chelsea is near the top. I recall having that when I was here before. Maybe in the short run, that’s a good thing for me because everyone can start over.”
Lampard stated that returning to the club to temporarily replace Graham Potter, who was fired on Sunday after only seven months in command, was an “easy decision.” Lampard sat in the stands on Tuesday evening as a Blues team led by caretaker manager Bruno Saltor drew 0-0 with Liverpool to kick off the post-Potter era.
“It’s a simple decision for me. This is my organization. I’m filled with emotions and feelings,” he added. “I’ve come with the hope of contributing to the cause till the end of the season. I’ll do everything in my power to offer the fans what they want until the end of the season. The team is loaded with talent. I’m excited to work with and assist that talent.”
Chelsea has nine Premier League games left this season, beginning with a trip to Wolves on Saturday, followed by the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final encounter against European champions Real Madrid.
