Jamie Redknapp believes that Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is the best in the world. De Bruyne was instrumental in City’s important 4-1 win against league-leading Arsenal on Wednesday night. With six more victories from their remaining seven games, City will be able to win the Premier League title for a third straight season. Although the quality of the Belgian has been well-known for the majority of his eight years at the Etihad Stadium, he did lose his spot in Pep Guardiola’s team earlier in the year. Redknapp told Essential Football that the 31-year-old is unrivaled in his position at the top of the world’s game and in the history of the Premier League now that he is back in peak form.
“It’s difficult, and I’ll be talking about family because no Premier League midfielder has ever scored more goals than Frank Lampard, and Patrick Vieira, Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard, and Patrick Vieira were all outstanding players,” Jamie Redknapp said about Kevin De Bruyne. “But I really think that, given all of his qualities, no one has ever passed the ball so well. I’ve never seen anything like his football IQ, the way he spots openings and stitches passes with such pin-point accuracy. He strikes the ball well and scores goals; in my opinion, he is the best. When people talk about Paul Scholes, they all have a pretty similar perspective on the game: Scholes wasn’t gifted with lightning-quick speed and wasn’t the most mobile player. But because of how sharp his mind was, he constantly presented you with new challenges when playing against you.”
Man City defeated Arsenal in a match that marked their seventh straight victory in the Premier League. Guardiola’s team is now just a few wins away from a Premier League first: a third straight trophy win. Additionally, City is rapidly approaching a historic treble that would include the FA Cup, Champions League, and another trophy—a feat accomplished only once in the annals of English football by Sir Alex Ferguson’s illustrious team in 1998–99.
