Former Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini has sprung to the defense of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire. Chiellini believes that there is too much pressure being put on his shoulders. The England international is out of favor with Erik ten Hag who has preferred the pairing of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane. Maguire who joined United for £80m has become the scapegoat for their poor run of form.
“Given that Maguire is a talented player, I feel bad for his predicament. He is being asked to do too much. Does he have to win every game just because they spent £80 million on him? It’s improper. Many factors that you have no influence over affect the market’s worth. You are not to blame,” Giorgio Chiellini said about Harry Maguire. “He and [John Stones] make a great team. Maguire may not be Rio Ferdinand, but he is still good. It’s not assisting [England] to perform at its best in this circumstance. It is hard to win the World Cup if your key players have issues, and Maguire unquestionably represents one of those crucial guys.”
Meanwhile, Frank Lebouef has labeled Liverpool right-back as a Championship-level defender. Alexander-Arnold has transformed into one of the most creative and attack-minded right-backs over the past few seasons although recently his defensive capabilities have come under scrutiny.
“Trent Alexander-Arnold is an example. I adore the guy’s offensive characteristics. However, he is at Championship level defensively,” Lebouef said. “His only effective system is Klopp’s. All you notice are his defensive flaws when it doesn’t function as well as it has this season. To focus on the fundamentals, I want to bring him along. I would tell him to turn around and look behind him because things would already be better. Numerous generations of defenders were changed by Roberto Carlos.”
