Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag believes that their trophy drought has gone on for too long. The Carabao Cup this season gives United the chance to end their longest major award drought in 40 years, having last experienced success in 2017. In the first leg of their semi-final matchup against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag’s team will go to the City Ground on Wednesday. The Dutchman hopes to add to the six championships he already has with Ajax.
“Winning a trophy is the best feeling a person can experience. I had the good fortune to win various awards over my career, which is wonderful, especially for the fans,” Man Utd head coach Erik ten Hag said. “It’s so awesome, and I believe that the fans here, particularly the older ones, have some knowledge. But it’s been too long and it’s a time when Manchester United didn’t win any trophies. We are aware of this and will stop at nothing to bring home a trophy.”
This season, United is also competing for success in the Europa League and FA Cup, but after a poor week, its chances of winning the first Premier League championship since 2013 appear to be dwindling. After their victory in the Manchester derby, there was talk of a potential title push, but a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace and a 3-2 loss to league-leaders Arsenal have served as a reminder that Ten Hag’s renovation is still in its early stages. On Sunday, United led at the Emirates, but a last-second Eddie Nketiah goal sealed a 3-2 victory, dropping Ten Hag’s team 11 points off the lead.
“We left it behind,” he added. “We came to the correct conclusions, and now that Wednesday night’s game is important, the focus is on moving forward rapidly.”
