Brendan Rodgers has left Leicester City after spending four years at the club. Rodgers leaves Leicester in the relegation zone after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s last-gasp victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday inflicted a fifth league defeat in six games. On Sunday morning, Leicester executives and Rodgers met and concluded that it was best for all parties if he left his position immediately.
“Brendan Rodgers and Leicester City Football Club have agreed that he will leave the club after four years as manager of our men’s first team,” the club said in a statement. “Brendan departs King Power Stadium as one of the club’s most successful managers, having led us to our long-awaited first FA Cup victory in 2021, the FA Community Shield the following year, two of the club’s three highest Premier League finishes, and consecutive European campaigns, culminating in our first European semi-final in 2022.”
First-team coaches Adam Sadler and Mike Stowell will take “immediate responsibility” for the team, which will face Aston Villa at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday. Rodgers was the Premier League’s 12th manager to leave this season, two more than the previous record in a single season, with Graham Potter becoming the 13th later on Sunday after being fired by Chelsea.
“Football can be a harsh sport. There wasn’t much to do in the game. We got off to a great start in the second half, scoring a wonderful goal. It was a controversial free kick, but [Eberechi Eze] finished it beautifully. Following that, we stopped playing seriously, and there wasn’t much created. You need that bit of concentration and to be strong and decisive in the last stages of the game,” Brendan Rodgers said after the loss. “Regrettably, we gave them too much room, which we never deserved, and I feel bad for the players. It hurts a lot to have lost the game. We are not at the pinnacle of our confidence, but the players have shown resilience today, and as a result, there is suffering. So we must put that to use in our next game on Tuesday.”
