Lionel Messi may have played his final game for Barcelona after his absence from Sunday’s match against Eibar was reported. Read more about Barcelona vs Eibar match here.
With a 2-1 defeat to Celta Vigo last week, the Camp Nou side will end their season with a trip to Eibar, but they will have nothing to compete for after being ruled out of the title chase. They would, however, be without their talisman, as Ronald Koeman has granted Messi permission to sit out the game this weekend.
Messi Misses The Practice Session
“With the coach’s permission, Argentine Leo Messi did not practice on Friday. And he will not be in the squad for Saturday’s match against Eibar,” the club announced on Friday.
“After a season in which he has featured the most in the team, the striker will take a break. The break will be before next month’s Copa America.”
The contract of the Argentina international at the Catalan club will expire at the end of the season. Despite his declaration last year that he decided to leave on a free transfer. Barca is hopeful of persuading him to stay, and teammate Jordi Alba has encouraged him to do so.
Due to their financial resources and the involvement of former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, Manchester City has been touted as one of the leading candidates to sign him. However, Paris Saint-Germain is said to be in the running, hoping to reunite him with his former teammate Neymar.
This season, Messi has appeared 47 times for Barcelona in all competitions, scoring 38 goals and assisting 11 times.
Despite finishing third in La Liga and exiting the Champions League in the last 16 rounds, Barcelona ends the season with one trophy. They have also won the Copa del Rey in April.
