Arsenal Women left-back Steph Catley has signed a new contract. The left-back joined the Gunners in 2020, and in August of that year, she made her Champions League debut as a substitute against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Women’s quarterfinal. The Australian international, 29, has made 74 appearances for the team and has three goals to his credit.
“Amazingly, it seems like home here. I’ve made some amazing friends here, so when the opportunity presented itself, I was quite certain of what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be,” Arsenal Women left-back Steph Catley said. “I’ve never been more content playing football, and I think this squad is incredibly special; we’re creating something unique, and in the future, we can do anything.”
Catley, who made 32 appearances and contributed four assists and one goal to Arsenal’s 2022–23 campaign, was a crucial member of the team. In addition to her regular position on the left side of the defense, Catley also played center-back a few times throughout the season, turning in strong performances, such as in Arsenal’s 5-1 victory against Lyon, the current Champions League champions, in October 2022.
“I’m thrilled Steph chose to renew her agreement with us. One of the top defenders in the game, Steph is a great asset to our team both on and off the ball,” Arsenal Women head coach Jonas Eidevall said. “We’re all happy to announce that Steph will remain a member of Arsenal for many more years to come since she is a role model for a professional and has consistently delivered when needed during my time here.”
Catley has played more than 100 times for Australia at the international level, representing the Matildas in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics as well as the 2015 and 2019 FIFA World Cups.
“She is an important member of this squad, and we are happy to announce that she will carry the Arsenal colors going forward,” Arsenal head of women’s football Clare Wheatley said. “The announcement that Steph has renewed her contract with Arsenal is wonderful. One of the best players in the world in her position, Steph has shown to be so reliable during her time here.”
