Bayern Munich beat Schalke 2-0 to ensure they finish top of the Bundesliga going into the winter break. With Serge Gnabry and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scoring once in each half for the Bavarians, who started a starting lineup made up entirely of World Cup hopefuls, Jamal Musiala of Germany provided both of the assists. With their sixth straight league victory and tenth overall, Bayern moved up to 34 points, six points ahead of second-placed RB Leipzig, who defeated Werder Bremen 2-1. On the 27th, Freiburg and Union Berlin will square off on Sunday. Although Bayern had the advantage early on, it wasn’t until Musiala, who at 19 is the club’s youngest player to appear in 100 games, skillfully teamed with teammate Ganbry of Germany to take the lead in the 38th minute.
“Jamal had a standout first half of the season and should have an even better second half of the season and World Cup,” Bayern Munich head coach Julian Naglesmann said after they went top of the Bundesliga. “He is a good listener and aspires to grow. Simply put, he is really talented. He’s also gotten better defensively.”
After earlier coming close with a glancing header, the teenager, who also has nine league goals, provided Choupo-Moting with his sixth assist of the year, allowing the Cameroonian forward to tap in seven minutes after the restart and send Schalke into last place after their eighth defeat in their last nine games. With 11 goals in all competitions, including six in the league, the 33-year-old forward is in excellent form heading into the World Cup. Due to the World Cup beginning in Qatar next weekend, the Bundesliga will take a lengthy vacation after this weekend’s games and resume on January 20.
