Ryan Christie scored one and assisted another to help Scotland produce one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Nations League. John Egan opened the scoring for the visitors in the 18th minute before Jack Hendry equalized for the hosts in the 49th minute. Christie scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute to ensure they will need just a point against Ukraine to gain promotion to the top tier.
Match Reaction
Scotland match-winner Ryan Christie: “Oh, that’s a major victory. For a variety of reasons, we entered the match with an intense desire to win. We clearly started on Wednesday night with one victory, but our goal was to leave this camp with three. I believe the major contributing element was what transpired in Dublin over the summer; we felt we had let the supporters and ourselves down there and vowed to make amends, which we luckily accomplished.”
Republic of Ireland defender John Egan: “We’re quite dissatisfied. I believe that we played brilliantly in the first half, got the lead, and failed to withstand the early storm. They score in the second half, but we answered effectively in my opinion. We haven’t yet received the penalty kickback, but it’s a hard one to take. We were given a chance. We think we could have won the game as well, so it’s sad not to have benefited from it. Our front two were wreaking havoc up top, and we were creating opportunities, in my opinion, in the first half. We seized the lead, and fortunately for me, I scored, giving us a terrific position.”
