Brazil and Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus is set to miss the rest of the World Cup after suffering a knee injury. The striker departed the pitch in the 64th minute of Friday’s 1-0 loss to Cameroon due to an injury. The left defender Alex Telles, who left the field hurt in Brazil’s final Group G match due to a right knee problem, has also been disqualified from the competition.
“According to information provided by the Brazilian FA after the match against Cameroon, players Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus underwent exams on Saturday morning. Along with Rodrigo Lasmar, the Brazilian National Team’s medical director, they performed an MRI on the right knee, which revealed the damage and the impossibility of recovery in time to compete in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” the Brazil FA said after Gabriel Jesus is set to miss the World Cup. “The coordinator of the Brazilian National Team, Juninho Paulista, will decide whether Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus stay in Doha to complete their medical treatment or return to their clubs after consulting with the sports directors of Arsenal and Sevilla.”
Neymar’s health is already a problem for Brazil because he has missed the last two games because of an ankle ailment. Arsenal, led by Mikel Arteta, will face a battle as they travel to West Ham on Boxing Day to begin their Premier League campaign. Jesus is the second Arsenal player to leave his World Cup squad before the tournament began; in Qatar, defender Ben White left England’s group for “personal reasons.”
