Tottenham Women have completed the signing of Bethany England from Chelsea for a transfer record £250,000. Breaking the previous record of Lauren James’ £200,000 transfer from Manchester United to Chelsea in 2021, the deal is reportedly worth £250,000. England has agreed to a three-year contract with the Spurs and will don the No. 19 jersey. The 28-year-old departs from Chelsea after seven years and 164 appearances for the Blues, where she won nine major championships and 74 goals. With the World Cup coming up in the summer, England, who has 11 goals in 21 games for the Lionesses, is eager to play more frequently now that she has lost her spot in the England squad.
“My following chapter. I’m ecstatic to be a part of Spurs Women,” Bethany England said after completing her move to Tottenham. “I’m excited to meet the females and begin at this fantastic club. Together, let’s make some history!”
“Beth has provided the club with a tonne of service,” Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said. “She has played a part in every one of our victories over the previous seven years and leaves Chelsea as a champion and an icon. For the next phase of her career, we wish her nothing but the best.”
The season of the north London team needs a boost, and the flashiest way to do it is with a prominent No 9. Spurs haven’t been in great shape lately; they’ve lost four straight WSL games and haven’t managed a single goal in that time. The club expressed confidence in its ability to improve upon its fifth-place position from the previous campaign to Tottenham head coach Rehanne Skinner before the start of the current campaign. England is the ideal star on which Spurs may now tie their hopes. Be wary of the alleged £250,000 price tag. The amount is the highest the deal can be worth after performance bonuses, and the majority of it won’t be paid upfront.
