Raheem Sterling defended under fire England manager Gareth Southgate before they take in Germany in the Nations League. The team’s form has taken a dip at the wrong time with just one win in their last five games and the World Cup around the corner. The manager was booed by traveling fans after their 1-0 defeat to Italy with their World Cup opener against Iran looming on November 21 in the 2022 World Cup.
“We are all aware that is a natural consequence of playing professional football. You are being scrutinized, and while much of it is unjust, that is the level to which England is being scrutinized,” Raheem Sterling said. “We are constantly under pressure to succeed, therefore we shouldn’t be alarmed by this slight drop in performance. We now have a significant opportunity to go out and demonstrate our capabilities once more in the upcoming winter. Because of what he has accomplished since taking the position, including getting us to a semifinal and a championship game, it is clear where we are headed. Although we are aware that we are not yet at our potential, I believe there are still advantages to be found.”
“Since the manager took over, he has always worked to keep us safe. He has always worked to create a tranquil environment for us so that we can go out and perform our duties on the football field,” he added. “We all had to step back after the summer to examine our own selves. None of us were pleased with those performances, and I don’t believe Gareth should take full responsibility. We have players in our group who have competed at the greatest level; as a team, we need to start correcting some of these performances and winning football games.”
