Kilmarnock striker Kyle Lafferty faces a minimum 10-game ban after the use of sectarian language. It comes after a video of the striker replying to a man who said “Up the Celts” while posing for a photo with him surfaced on social media. He allegedly violated disciplinary regulations 77 and 81, the latter of which carries a minimum 10-game suspension, according to the SFA notice of complaint.
If Lafferty is found guilty at the hearing, which is set for October 20, he won’t be able to play again until at least January 14, 2023, when Kilmarnock plays Rangers. Additionally cut from the Northern Ireland roster for their UEFA Nations League matches against Kosovo and Greece was the 35-year-old former Rangers and Hearts striker.
Kilmarnock has completed its inquiry into the behavior of Kyle Lafferty. The club fined Lafferty a “significant” amount, and they also partnered with Scotland’s top anti-sectarian organization Nil By Mouth, which will work with Lafferty one-on-one and provide training to other club members. Lafferty’regrets his actions and realizes he has let down himself, his family, the club, and the supporters,’ it is reportedly said. Lafferty has also promised to continue supporting Kilmarnock’s “football for all” initiative on a weekly basis as well as different community club initiatives.
Despite Lafferty’s departure from the team, Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough insists there is still a path back to international football for him. He claimed that when the choice was made to remove the striker from the team, a back injury had also been taken into account.
