Hibernian forward Martin Boyle is set to miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery. The 29-year-old was forced off in Hibs’ 3-0 victory over St Mirren in October after spending six months with the Saudi club Al-Faisaly. He had returned to Easter Road in August. Boyle was still chosen by Australia for the World Cup and left for Qatar, but examinations showed that he already had an anterior cruciate ligament tear. In Qatar, he underwent surgery to correct the problem, and now he is starting his recovery process in anticipation of playing again the following season.
“Martin has had a difficult few weeks, and we are all heartbroken for him,” Hibernian manager Lee Johnson said about Martin Boyle. “Now it’s up to us to come together and make sure he has our full support as he recovers. In the short term, we are devastated, but we will do all in our power to help Martin and ensure that he recovers stronger fitter, and a greater player than before, just as Kevin Nisbet has demonstrated in his recovery.”
On December 15, Hibernian will face Rangers in the Scottish Premiership competition. Captain David Marshall acknowledges that results and performances need to improve following a difficult start to the season. After dropping six of their last seven games, the Easter Road team is ninth in the standings.
“You want to enter the break on the heels of a strong victory, but our performance against Kilmarnock was disappointing,” he added. “Given our recent performance, it most likely came at the wrong time. There are other ways to look at it because we have a few injuries that we expect to recover from over the next several weeks, making us stronger for the next game. We had put ourselves in a solid position prior to the last six games, so they have been quite discouraging. Without a doubt, we need to do better.”
