Managerless Cardiff won another game as they produced one of the comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Championship. As a result of goals from Charlie Wyke, Callum Robinson, Sheyi Ojo, and Ryan Wintle for the Bluebirds, Mark Hudson’s outstanding tenure as City interim manager continues. Wigan came out firing after making five changes from their midweek loss at Hull. He was set free down the right after some fine work by the captain Tendayi Darikwa, but his cross was just over Josh Magennis in the center. Cardiff demonstrated for them how to do it by carrying out their initial attack.
Robinson was set up by Niels Nkounkou, who finished coolly past Ben Amos who was closing in. When Magennis crossed from the left, Wigan was almost in, but Charlie Wyke was unable to get a touch, and the ball sailed through the box. With a few chances that were presented to him, the team’s leading scorer Will Keane should have performed better. He missed a chance to play in Magennis and then shot weakly wide of the goal. Wyke appeared to be clipped just inside the area, and Wigan loudly yelled for a penalty. However, referee James Bell waved the play on. Then, Keane took over Cardiff’s defense by blocking Graeme Shinies exploding shot, which may have put goalkeeper Ryan Allsop to the test.
Shortly after, Wintle’s shot was shoved in by Harris into the Wigan goal, but the flag was raised on the opposite side. With eight minutes left, Wyke headed home Tom Naylor’s cross from close range, giving Wigan four substitutions for the final period. But in the first of the additional seven minutes, Wintle increased the score to 3-1 with a powerful drive from outside the right flank. After a scuffle in the box, the home team came close to pulling one back, but Cedric Kipre, an ex-Wigan player, cleared the ball off the line. At the very end, Cardiff should have added a fourth goal, but Ojo raced clean through and missed the outside of the post.
